The "Wooden Oar War" Takes Place this Saturday - ROSTER UPDATE
ROSTER UPDATE: THE BROWN TEAM WILL NOW CONSIST OF THE FIRST TEAM OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, WHILE THE GOLD TEAM WILL CONSIST OF THE SECOND/THIRD TEAM OFFENSE AND DEFENSE. SPECIAL TEAMS WILL PLAY FOR BOTH TEAMS. UPDATED FLIP CARD IS AVAILABLE UNDER RELATED CONTENT.
Western Michigan football hosts its annual spring game on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m., as the Broncos and head coach P.J. Fleck introduce new traditions.
The teams will be as they have been in the past, Brown vs. Gold, but beginning this year they will play for something tangible - The Wooden Oar. This "trophy" will be presented to the winning team of the annual spring game beginning this season and from here on out. Each year, the gold plate will be placed on the oar with the name of the winning team and the score.
In the past, the spring game has been scored using a modified scoring system awarding points to both the offense and the defense for various achievements. This year, it is a game with 15 minute quarters and regular game management for the first half. The second half will have a running clock.
The Brown team will consist of the No. 1 offense with the No. 2 defense, while the Gold team will be made up of the No. 1 defense and the No. 2 offense. Special teams will participate for both teams throughout the scrimmage.
Another new tradition Coach Fleck and his staff is instituting in 2013 is the honorary coaches. Two people synonymous with WMU football will serve as coaches on the sideline. The inaugural honorary coaches this Saturday will be Jordan White and Bill Brown.
Also new to the game this year will be a live DJ playing throughout the scrimmage, giving fans a look into what they can expect once the season kicks off in 2013.
After the game, every member of the Western Michigan football team, including Coach Fleck, will line the perimeter of the Waldo Stadium turf for an autograph session.
Admission to the inaugural "Wooden Oar War" is a toy or game that will be provided to the Bronson Children's Hospital. Please click here for full details.
Gates will open at 11:30 a.m. Concession will be open during the game but only on the Bill Brown side of the stadium (home sideline).
There will be a moment of silence prior to the National Anthem to honor those affected by the bombings during the Boston Marathon earlier this week.
Tomorrow we will post capsules of each position in preview of the "Wooden Oar War." WMU Athletics will have flip cards available at the stadium with the team break downs. Complete statistics and video highlights will be available on www.wmubroncos.com on Saturday evening.
