KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis fell in a close contest at home on Saturday, as the Ball State Cardinals defeated the Broncos 4-3 at West Hills Athletic Club.  With the loss, the Broncos fall to 11-12 on the season, 4-3 in Mid-American Conference play.

The Broncos had a strong start to the day, winning the doubles point in dramatic fashion with a win in the No. 2 doubles match, but they soon found themselves embroiled in a tight back-and-forth match.  Kathleen Hawkins and Kelsey King continued their recent hot play, with both players extending their personal singles win streaks to three matches; King finished with a 2-0 record on the day, as she also teamed with Jill Pastunink to win the No. 3 doubles match.

Ball State took the first doubles match of the day, winning at No. 1 doubles, but the Broncos responded moments later at No. 3.  King and Pastunink took a back and forth battle with Ashlyn Rang and Lauren Pickrel, beating the pair 8-5.  The focus moved to the center court, where Maggie Remynse and Nini Sujashvili faced Bethany Moore and Kristel Sanders at the No. 2 doubles position.  The Broncos' duo forced a tiebreaker to close the set, beating the Cardinals 9-8 (2) to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos.

Things would remain just as tense in the singles session, with the teams trading matches back and forth throughout.  The Cardinals took the first two singles matches on the courts to take a 2-1 lead, but Hawkins responded with a gutty effort in the No. 4 singles match.  Hawkins rebounded from a second set loss to cruise to victory in the third set, beating Ayaka Terashi 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 to tie the team match.  The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead with a win in the No. 3 singles match, but King struck right back and took the No. 6 singles match from Rang, winning 6-4, 7-5.

However, Bethany Moore was able to grind out a three-set win in a tiebreaker to clinch the match for the Cardinals, beating Caroline Aleck in the No. 5 match.
