Men's Tennis Set To Clash With Ball State
Western Michigan Broncos (16-8, 2-1 MAC) at Ball State Cardinals (13-7, 2-0 MAC)
Saturday, April 13 // 1 p.m.
This will be the 53rd meeting between the Broncos and the Cardinals, with Ball State holding a 30-22 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. Coached by Western Michigan alumnus and former tennis player Bill Richards, the Cardinals last defeated the Broncos to cap the 2011 season, winning 4-3 in the semifinal round of the 2011 MAC Tournament en route to a tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth.
In their last meeting, though, the Broncos exacted a measure of revenge, defeating the Cardinals 6-1 at West Hills Athletic Club during the 2012 season. Nadin Indre, Ross VanderPloeg, and Aaron Wong all recorded singles wins.
FIRST TO THE QUARTER MARK
Despite there being two returning All-MAC players to the 2013 Broncos roster, some might be surprised to know that the team's singles wins leader is a freshman. Andrew Cahn boasts the highest wins total on the team in 2013 with a 25-16 recbord, including a solid 15-9 record in dual match play, as well as the best fall tournament wins record on the team at 10-7. Cahn is also a perfect 3-0 in conference play.
The meeting between the Broncos and the Cardinals represents the two programs with the most Mid-American Conference championships in the history of the conference; the Broncos lead the way with 22 conference championships, while the Cardinals rank second with 17 conference titals. According to the official MAC record books, either the Broncos or the Cardinals have won each of the last 15 conference titals, and either Bill Richards or Dave Morin have won nine of the last 10 MAC Coach of the Year honors; Morin has won six such titles since 2003, while Richards has earned three in that span.
