KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened up Mid-American Conference play with a hard-fought victory, as the Broncos defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles 4-3 at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday.  With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-9 on the season, 1-0 in MAC play.

Nini Sujashvili and Jill Pastunink each went 2-0 overall on the day, winning both their singles matches as well as their respective doubles matches.  Caroline Aleck picked up the match-clinching victory for the Broncos, and Maggie Remynse and Kelsey King earned wins in their respective doubles matches to help clinch the win.

The Broncos opened the match by capturing what turned out to be a crucial doubles point, taking a 1-0 lead on the Eagles after the doubles session.  Sujashvili and Remynse teamed for a victory in the No. 2 doubles match, beating Daphne Friedrichs and Mariya Toncheva 8-4 to give the Broncos the early edge in the session.  The Eagles picked up a win at No. 1 singles to even the odds, but King and Pastunink settled the doubles session with an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles, beating Zsofia Biro and Ankita Bhatia.

Eastern Michigan tied the overall match when they took the first singles match of the day, but Sujashvili seized the lead for the Broncos for good with a dominant win in No. 1 singles, defeating Nino Mebuke 6-1, 6-4.  Pastunink was similarly in control of her match, defeating Friedrichs 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 match to give the Broncos a 3-1 edge.

Bhatia kept EMU alive with a win over Kathleen Hawkins in the No. 4 singles match, but Aleck shut the door on the Broncos' cross-state rivals with a win at No. 5, beating Toncheva 6-3, 6-3.  Aleck's victory represented her team-best 16th singles win of the season.
