CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team competed in the first day of the HEB Tournament of Champions, hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, but the Broncos fell in both of their matches on Friday, losing to Lousiana-Lafayette 4-1 and #30 Brigham Young 4-2.  With the losses, the Broncos fall to 8-7 on the season.

Ross VanderPloeg had an excellent day in singles, earning a pair of victories in No. 2 singles matches against the Ragin' Cajuns and the Cougars.  The wins snapped a two-match losing streak for VanderPloeg, who has now won four of his last six matches.  Also earning a singles victory on the day was Pablo Mora, who won his second of the day in the match against BYU.

The day began with a tight match against the Ragin' Cajuns, with the Broncos falling just short in their bid to advance to the semifinals of the weekend.  Ross VanderPloeg notched the lone point for the Broncos in the match, defeating Jake Wynan 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.

The Broncos had a shot of taking two other singles matches, with Ruben Greiner and Pablo Mora each about to enter full third sets against their opponents in the Nos. 4 and 5 matches, respectively; Greiner took a second-set tiebreaker against Jarred Wynan, while Mora was in the middle of a second-set tiebreaker with Edgar Lopez.

The doubles session was a tight affair as well, with the Broncos just moments from making the third doubles match an integral part of the proceedings.  Aaron Wong and Stephen Payne continued their recent strong play, but ultimately fell to Lopez and Jarred Wynan in the No. 2 doubles match.  The pairing of Greiner and Nadin Indre were close to forcing a tiebreaker, but their No. 1 doubles match ultimately went unfinished.

The Broncos improved to two singles wins against the nationally-ranked Cougars in the evening session, but they fell just short in extending the match to doubles play, per the rules of the tournament.  VanderPloeg won his second singles match of the day, defeating Spencer Smith 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. Mora earned his first overall win of the day, beating Andrey Goryachkov 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match.  Indre came the closest to extending the match, winning the first set of the No. 1 singles match before falling 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 to 47th-ranked Patrick Kawka.
