Track & Field Heads to EMU for the MAC Championship

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan track and field heads to Eastern Michigan University for the 2013 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championship at Bowen Fieldhouse beginning on Friday.

Events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the pentathlon, in which WMU's Kathryn Picket and Lindsey Hufnagel will be competing. The Broncos qualified the maximum of three athletes in the 60 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 60 meter hurdles, long jump, triple jump, weight throw and shot put. WMU also has two qualifiers in the 800 meter run, high jump and the pole vault.

Friday will see Western Michigan compete in preliminaries of the 60 hurdles and dash, 200, 400 and 800. Becca Peacock will compete in the finals of the 5,000 meter run on Friday evening, while Ariel Arnold, Cara Cremeans, Aisha Hodge and Rachel Whitley will compete in the finals of the distance medley relay.

Iris Campbell, Pickett and Hufnagel will compete in the finals of the long jump. WMU's trio of juniors Stephanie Negrete, Andrea Hiler and Chelsea Gerbers will compete in the shot put finals late Friday afternoon. Freshmen Reagan Engstrom and Alexia Dahl will take part in the pole vault as well.

The Broncos have never won an indoor MAC Championship but have finished in second place three times under head coach Kelly Lycan.

Events pick up again on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
