O'Brien Named MAC Gymnast of the Week
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan senior gymnast Caroline O'Brien was named Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week after a superb performance in WMU's win at Ball State this past Friday.
Western Michigan (5-3, 2-1 MAC) handed Ball State its first conference loss of the season, defeating the Cardinals on the road Friday, 194.200 to 193.275.
O'Brien tied the second highest score in program history on the uneven bars, placing first with a career-high 9.900. O'Brien currently ranks 15th in the nation on bars in the GymInfo rankings, her performance at BSU moving her up two places in the poll from the previous week.
O'Brien also had a big night on floor exercise and the balance beam, finishing third on floor with a 9.825 and fourth on beam with a 9.800.
The gymnast of the week honor is the third for Western Michigan this season and the first of O'Brien's career. Freshman all-arounder Kayla Weber has twice been named the top gymnast.
The Broncos return to University Arena for their first home meet in over a month, Feb. 24, hosting rival Central Michigan, Sunday, Feb. 24, on Girl Scouts' Day at 1 p.m.
