Women's Tennis Pushes Marquette but Falls 5-2
The Golden Eagles swept the doubles session, but the Broncos pushed Marquette to the limit in the singles session, taking two singles matches and falling just narrowly short in others. Nini Sujashvili and Kathleen Hawkins each earned their second straight wins, earning wins in the Nos. 1 and 3 matches, respectively. Sujashvili earned her second win over a Marquette player of the season - she had defeated Rocio Diaz at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in the fall - with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Ana Pimienta in the No. 1 singles match. The win gave Sujashvili her team-leading fifth dual match victory of the season.
Hawkins pushed her dual match record into the black for the season with her win, defeating Ali Dawson 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match. The win pushes Hawkins to a 9-8 record in singles on the season, including a 3-2 record in dual match play. Jill Pastunink came close to earning a third victory for the Broncos at the top of the line-up, pushing Diaz to a third set before falling in a super tiebreaker.
The doubles session was hotly contested, with the Broncos coming within a hair of earning the doubles point at the beginning. Pastunink and Sujashvili gave Dawson and Diaz a run for their money, falling short by a single break with a 9-7 loss. Hawkins and Kelsey King found themselves in a similar situation, losing 9-7 in the No. 2 doubles match to Pimienta and Erin Gebes.
The Broncos will be back in action this weekend, when they host Youngstown State at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday.
