Broncos Open Weekend With Win at Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team earned their fourth win in five matches to start the 2013 season, defeating the Green Bay Phoenix 6-1 on Saturday evening. With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-1 on the season. They will wrap the weekend with a match against Marquette on Monday.
The Broncos swept the doubles session against the Phoenix, winning all three matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. They followed with a dominant singles session, taking five of six matches from the Phoenix to seal the victory.
Despite a short turnaround after a day of travel, the Broncos rolled through the doubles session to take a 1-0 lead on the Phoenix. Nini Sujashvili and Jill Pastunink took the No. 1 doubles match over Amanda Timm and Rebecca Nelson 8-2, and Maggie Remynse and Kelsey King posted an identical winning score in the No. 2 doubles match over Maria Anderson and Samantha Iwen. The Broncos completed the sweep with a win in the No. 3 doubles match, with Kathleen Hawkins and Hailey Shanahan downing Stephanie Londre and Eleanor O'Brien 8-3.
Five Broncos would earn their second wins of the day in the singles session, as WMU took five of the six singles matches to set the final score in the win. Sujashvili and Shanahan had perhaps the most dominant victories, winning the Nos. 1 and 6 matches, respectively, by 6-0, 6-0 scores, with Sujashvili defeating Timm and Shanahan beating O'Brien. King made short work of Iwen in the No. 5 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-1, and Hawkins defeated Anderson 6-2, 6-3. The hardest fought victory of the day belonged to Remynse, who faced a tough second set from Nelson but managed a 6-2, 7-5 win.
