KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, defeating the Cleveland State Vikings 5-2 and the Aquinas College Saints 6-1.  With the wins, the Broncos improve to 5-3 on the season.

The Broncos opened the day with the thrilling victory over the Vikings, winning five of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point to earn the victory.  The Vikings swept the doubles session to take the 1-0 lead in the match, but Ruben Greiner tied the overall match with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Joe VanMeter in the No. 4 singles match. Cleveland State re-took the lead with a win in the No. 3 singles match, with Ali Shabib defeating Aaron Wong 6-4, 6-3.

However, the Broncos won a series of nail-biters to end the match, including three matches that went to full third sets and a fourth that went to a second-set tiebreaker.  Pablo Mora responded to a first set loss with two straight set wins, beating Nolan Marks 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles match to make it 2-1.  Nadin Indre bounced back from a loss in his second set in the No. 1 singles match, taking a tight third set from Jorg van der Vloet to win 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.  Ross VanderPloeg clinched the team match for the Broncos with an exciting come-from-behind win over Matt Kuelker in the No. 2 singles; the senior trailed 4-1 and 5-2 in the first and second sets, respectively, but still defeated Kuelker 6-4, 7-6 (5).  Andrew Cahn wrapped the match with a 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4 win over Niklas Jonsson in the No. 6 singles match.

The match against the Saints proved to be much less stressful, as the Broncos took the doubles point and five of the six singles matches.  The doubles session was no walk in the park, though, as the Broncos needed a win in the No. 3 doubles to clinch the victory.  After VanderPloeg and Indre notched the first doubles victory with an 8-5 win in the No. 1 match, the pairing of Greiner and Stephen Payne beat Mike Sendor and Frankie Fischer 8-6 to break a doubles deadlock and give the Broncos the point.

Singles moved quickly, with the Broncos rattling off five straight victories to put the result out of reach early.  Mora moved up in the line-up, beating Nik Artaev 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match, and Jim Beckwith gave the Broncos a 3-0 edge with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andy Struble in the No. 5 match.  Greiner clinched the overall match victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kristof Saari in the No. 2 singles match, Indre earned his second singles win of the event with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Aaron Hendrick in the No. 1 match, and Cahn wrapped the Broncos' scoring with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 4 singles match.
