KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened the 2013 dual match season with a pair of dominating performances, as the Broncos earned 7-0 sweeps over the Dayton Flyers and the Valparaiso Crusaders at West Hills Athletic Club on Monday.  With the wins, the Broncos improve to 2-0 to start the 2013 season.

The Broncos were perfect in regards to their individual match performances on Monday, winning all six singles matches and three doubles matches in each of their team matches.  Four of the seven Broncos competing on Monday earned four overall wins, and two others - Caroline Aleck and freshman Hailey Shanahan, making her Bronco debut - won three matches.  Kathleen Hawkins was a perfect 2-0 on the day, as well.

The day began with an early match against Dayton, with the Broncos showing no sign of rust despite this being their first competition in more than two months.  Maggie Remynse and Kelsey King jumped all over the Flyers' Georgia Lammers and Erin Flibrandt, downing them 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles match to open play.  Nini Sujashvili and captain Jill Pastunink followed that effort with an 8-2 defeat of Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens to clinch the doubles point, and Hawkins and Aleck wrapped the doubles session with an 8-3 win over Katie Boeckman and Sammi Hornbarger.

King jumped out to a lightning-fast result against Dayton's Filbrandt in the No. 5 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-0 to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.  Pastunink put the team in a position to win the match with the next point by beating Maureen Stevens 6-0, 6-2, and Remynse clinched the match result with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Boeckman in the No. 4 singles match.  With the match against the Flyers no longer in question, the only unresolved matter was the final score; Sujashvili and Shanahan each earned two-set singles victories to make it 6-0, and Hawkins closed the match with a super-tiebreaker victory over Peck, coming back from one set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2).

Things were even more lopsided in the afternoon match against Valparaiso, as the Broncos made quick work of the Crusaders in both doubles and singles.  The doubles pairings of Shanahan & Aleck and Sujashvili & Pastunink finished within moments of one another, clinching the doubles point with a pair of 8-0 finishes in the Nos. 3 and 1 matches, respectively.  King and Remynse weren't far behind, downing Kaitlyn Hamel and Megan Barthels 8-2 to sweep the doubles session.

Singles play was equally quick, with no Bronco dropping more than a single game en route to victories.  Shanahan picked up the first singles win of the match for the Brown and Gold, defeating Lauren Kammerer 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match to set the overall match score at 2-0.  Remynse produced an identical result in the No. 3 singles match, beating Michele Fredlake 6-0, 6-0 to put the Broncos in position to win the match.  Sujashvili did just that for the Broncos, beating Kristin Zakiewicz 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match to clinch the victory.  Aleck followed with a win in the No. 5 singles match over Angelina Goheen, and Pastunink wrapped the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hamel in the No. 2 match.
