KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan gymnastics team opens its 2013 schedule Saturday, Jan. 12, at Big Ten in-state rival Michigan State. The meet will take place at 4 p.m. at Jenison Field House.

Western Michigan finished the 2012 regular season with an 8-7, 4-2 Mid-American Conference record and closed out the year with a No. 39 national ranking. The Spartans posted an 8-5-1 record and finished the year ranked 32nd in the nation. Both teams received votes in the 2013 GymInfo preseason Top 25 poll.

WMU recorded its first and second ever program wins over Michigan State in 2011, defeating the Spartans, 192.050 to 191.850, Jan. 7, in East Lansing and 194.625 to 191.825, Feb. 6, in Kalamazoo. The Broncos and Spartans did not compete against one another last year.

Western Michigan returns 14 members from last year's squad, including seven seniors and four juniors. The Spartan lineup on the other hand is much younger, consisting of eight freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and one senior.

The Broncos were picked to finish second in the MAC this season after finishing second in the regular season and third at the MAC Championships last year.

Western Michigan had one of its best seasons in program history in 2012, winning seven of its first eight dual meets. Five of the team's overall losses were to programs ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

Following Saturday's meet at Michigan State, Western Michigan jumps right into league competition with back-to-back MAC meets, hosting Eastern Michigan Jan. 20 and traveling to Kent State Jan. 25.
