WMU launches an interactive guide that highlights the essence of each athletic program within athletics.

The word essence is defined as the basic, real and invariable nature of something or its significant individual feature or features.  In other words, what makes up something.

In an athletic program, the essence of that program is forged over time, through success, failure and those people involved in the process.  We sat down with the coaches that lead our 16 athletic teams to talk about what is the essence of their programs, how past success molds the current program and what people will say about the program in years to come.

We also sat down with student-athletes from each team and asked what it meant to be a student-athlete at Western Michigan, and when they look back what they will remember about their time in the Brown & Gold.

Each sport's page gives fans to watch the videos as well as click on links to the respective sport's social media platforms.  Some pages have the sport's or coach's twitter feed embedded in the page itself.  Fans can also link back to the official WMU athletic web site for information on the teams' history, archives, rosters and schedules.

We also want to get your feedback.  If you have a definition of essence in athletics or you are a former WMU student-athlete and you want to reflect on your time on campus, tweet using the hash tag #WMUEssence and give us your thoughts.  The best tweets will be compiled into Storify and posted on at a later date.
