KALAMAZOO, Mich. - In anticipation of the Western Michigan men's tennis team's upcoming spring dual match schedule, head coach Dave Morin announced today that Simon Blomberg and Ross VanderPloeg were voted team captains by their teammates.

"The support for these two to be captains was overwhelming," said Morin. "To me, that means these two were the clear, recognized leaders of this team."

Blomberg has been an integral part of five MAC championships in his first three years at Western Michigan; Morin pointed to Blomberg's hard work and continued presence around the team as contributing factors to his captaincy, despite the fact he did not compete in the fall portion of the schedule,

"Simon's dedication has been very impressive, especially considering everything he's gone through this season," said Morin. "That they voted him a captain is really a credit to the hard work he has put in, his leadership, and his play on the court.

VanderPloeg comes into the spring season off a First Team All-MAC season in 2012 in which he recorded an overall record of 56-21, including a team-best 30-10 mark in doubles play. Morin says that the senior has come into his own as a leader in recent seasons.

"Ross has been a natural leader for us on and off the court," said Morin. "He understands what's going on over the course of a match, to the point where he's almost like having another coach on the court. I think his leadership style complements Simon's very well."
