Countdown to Puck Drop: The CCHA's 42nd and Final Season
With now just 10 days remaining before the official start of the Division I collegiate hockey season, www.wmubroncos.com wants to give the fans 10 good reasons to be excited for the upcoming hockey season.
The focus of today's countdown is the final season of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The CCHA was formed in 1971 with the 1971-72 season being the first year of competition. The Broncos joined the CCHA for the 1973-74 season as Division II members at the time with their first season of Division I competition in 1975-76.
Heading in to this season the Broncos have 429 CCHA wins in program history and also hold two CCHA Tournament Championships, with the most recent being last season. WMU has also produced two CCHA Most Valuable Players in Wayne Gagne (1986-87) and Dan Dorion (1985-86).
In their final season the CCHA has launched its Celebrate the Legacy campaign. The league's goal is to find members from each of the 41 Mason Cup Championship teams. CCHA.com will feature stories on the teams throughout the season. Additionally to help Celebrate the Legacy the league will be showing a video retrospective with interviews of key players, coaches and administrators from the CCHA's history. They will also select the final CCHA All-Decade team which will span from 2000-2013. The league previously announced All-Decade squads from the 1970's, 80's and 90's back in 2001.
Come support your Broncos and the CCHA this season as WMU looks to repeat and become the final CCHA Champions.
