WMU Faces First MAC Challenge Against Toledo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Broncos were tested during their non-conference schedule facing three BCS-AQ schools (Illinois, Minnesota, UConn). After coming off a dramatic win against UConn 30-24, WMU receives its first MAC test of the season when the Broncos face the Toledo Rockets on Saturday night.
Toledo, coming off a narrow 38-28 win over Coastal Carolina, improved its record to 3-1 and 1-0 in the MAC. The Rockets' junior quarterback Terrance Owens will be a threat for the Broncos, as he is one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the NCAA.
"We've got our work cut out for us," said head coach Bill Cubit. "I'm excited for our first MAC game, but Toledo's good."
Last year's game was filled with offensive firepower as both teams combined for 1,439 yards (804 for Toledo, 635 for WMU). WMU unfortunately lost the historic game 66-63.
"That was a crazy game to be apart of," said junior Josh Schaffer.
While there may not be as many points scored and yards gained this year, the game is sure to have high implications in determining who wins the MAC West. The WMU defense looks to improve on their performance last year, as this year WMU ranks second in total defense in the MAC (353.3) and second in rushing defense (121.8).
"We're looking forward to the game," said Cubit. "It's hopefully going to be a great setting at night."
WMU will also be sporting alternate uniforms for their first MAC game on Saturday night. Both the coaches and players are excited about the opportunity to show off the new uniforms.
"If you look good, you play good," said Schaffer. "They're real tight and slick, and going to look good playing under the lights."
Along with the players wearing the new uniforms, the coaches will be wearing a Coach to Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines to help the cause and promote people to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD).
