Play Concludes At 2012 Vredevelt Invite
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team concluded its first tournament of the season on Sunday, as the Broncos' Ross VanderPloeg earned his way onto the All-Tournament team on the final day of the 2012 Jack Vredevelt Invite at Sorensen Courts.
VanderPloeg ranked as the third-highest scorer of the weekend among the six teams assembled on the weekend, compiling a 3-1 record in four singles matches that was second just to Xavier's Jim Roebker, who took home the singles champion honors. VanderPloeg finished his singles weekend with a win, defeating Xavier's Adam Krull 6-2, 6-2 in the morning session.
VanderPloeg would go on to team with Stephen Payne in an afternoon doubles session, as the team fell just short in their attempt to defeat Ryan Bandy and Ken Sabacinski of Notre Dame. VanderPloeg and Payne pushed the Fighting Irish to a tiebreaker in the set, but Bandy and Sabacinski held them off for a 9-8 (4) victory in doubles play.
Elsewhere in singles play on Sunday, freshman Michael Treis wrapped his first weekend of collegiate play with a victory. Treis got a win against a regional opponent, defeating Green Bay's Gary Notkin 6-0, 6-2 in a breezy two-set affair.
