KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team saw a bevy of newcomers make contributions in the first match of the 2012-13 season, as the Broncos wrapped their first day of play at the 2012 Jack Vredevelt Invite at Sorensen Courts.

All told, all four freshmen on the 2012-13 team picked up their first collegiate wins in some form or another, but it was one of the team's two seniors that provided a perfect 2-0 record on the day. One year after earning his first career All-MAC selection, VanderPloeg started his senior campaign by teaming with freshman Stephen Payne to defeat Erik Finkenbrink and Craig Cox in the first round of doubles. The duo defeated the pair from UW-Green Bay by an 8-5 score. Further down the court, freshmen Michael Treis and Jim Beckwith recorded hotly contested victory, beating the Phoenix's Joey Leto and Marius Merz 9-7 in doubles play.

VanderPloeg was not done, however; he would go on to beat Cleveland State's Jorg Van der Vloet 6-2, 6-2 in a breezy two-set affair. Freshman Andrew Cahn recorded his first career singles victory, overcoming the Vikings' Niklas Johnson 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (8) in singles play.

The Broncos will resume play tomorrow at 10 a.m. with doubles play, followed by two rounds of singles play.
