Broncos Tame Cougars, 2-1, for First Win of Season
The game was originally scheduled to be play in Conway, S.C., as a part of the Coastal Carolina Soccer Classic but the game was moved to C of C due to weather and field conditions.
Rachel Chaney and Kylie Nylen tallied for the Broncos in the win. WMU held the Cougars to zero shots in the first half and just two on goal in the second half with Michelle Watson making one save to earn her first win of the season.
“The first two games we played well on the field,” said first-year coach Nate Norman, who also earned his first career win. “We have done more than enough to create chances to win and I think it is just a matter of taking advantage of them.”
The first goal for WMU came in the 29th minute. Aubrey Sudomeier beat her marker and crossed it to Chaney, who was unguarded at the back post. Chaney calmly punched the ball into an open net to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
The Brown & Gold extended their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute off of a set piece. Lindsey Lee played the ball into the box but it was misplayed by a Cougar defender and bounced to Nylen. The freshman midfielder took advantage of the open net for her first goal of her collegiate career.
College of Charleston added a goal in the 88th minute.
