WMU Golf Shines this Summer; Par Buster Event Set for Aug. 27

Practice makes perfect in the world of golf and the WMU golf team has been doing just that over the summer months. All of the team members have been playing in amateur tournaments and sharpening their game for the upcoming season.

Kaylee Imel, the Broncos only returning senior for the 2012-13 campaign has played in four amateur tournaments throughout the summer. Imel placed first in the Women's Amateur Public Links Qualifier at Heartland Crossing Golf Links with a score of 75.  Following her win, she qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur, however she missed the cut by just five strokes with a two-day total of 154 (75-79).

She then missed qualifying for the U.S. Amateur by five strokes with a score of 81.  She finished with a tied for ninth showing at the Indiana Women's State Amateur with a three day total of 226 (73-77-76).

Junior Melissa Beurmann has had a busy summer as well, playing in three tournaments. Beurmann tied for 27th overall and eighth among amateurs at the Michigan Women's Open with a three-day total of 232 (74-80-78). She placed tied for 11th out of a field of 87 at the Michigan Amateur with a total of 153 (75-78).  Finishing 11th qualified Beurmann for match play in which she won the first match 5-4, the second match 3-1 and then lost the third match two down to the eventual winner of the match play overall.

Another incoming junior Heather Marks has played well during her time off this summer. Marks placed seventh in the Taylor-Made tournament at Hawk Hallow and Eagle Eye Golf Course with a two-day total of 161 (82-Hawk Hallow, 79-Eagle Eye). She then went on to finish 33rd overall and 10th for amateurs in the Women's Open.  She shot a three day total of 236 (78-81-77). 

Sophomore Kelsey Carney participated in the GAM Michigan Women's Amateur where she finished 22nd with a two-round total of 157 (77,80). Carney's score propelled her to match play in the tournament where she lost in the first round 5-4. She next played in the TaylorMade Collegiate Series tournament where she placed 24th with a two-round total of 166 (82,84).

Incoming freshman Emma Salata was apart of six events during the summer months. Salata placed first in the Adams Junior Golf Tournament at Arbor Hills Golf Course with a round score of 79. She then went on to finish tied for 17th in the AJGA with a three-day total of 255 (89,84,82). Yet again she finished first in the Adams Junior Golf Tournament at Walnut Hills Golf Club with a round score of 74.  She finished tied for 35th in the Taylormade Adidas Collegiate Series Tournament with a 27-hole score of 127 (82-18holes, 45-9holes).  In the Big "I" State Qualifier, Salata finished third with a two-round score of 164 (81-83).  She followed up the third place finish with yet another third place finish in the Adams Junior Golf Tournament at University of Michigan Golf Course. She shot a two-round score of 167 (81-86).

Another incoming freshman Chloe Lawrie also played in six events during the summer. Lawrie placed tied for 56th in the Crystal Mountain Michigan PGA Women's Open Championship with a three-day total of 262 (88-85-89). She played in the Flint Junior Golf Association tournament were she finished tied for 1st with a 18-hole score of 75.  In the USGA Women's Amateur Qualifier, she had a 18-hole score of 85 and missed qualifiy for the next event. She finished 41st in the Michigan Women's Amateur tournament with a two-day total of 163 (81-82). Lawrie played in back to back Flint Junior Golf Association Tournaments, were she finished second with a 18-hole score of 80. Then backed that up with a first place finish with a 18-hole score of 77 and won match play one up through 18-holes.

Sophomore Laura Moutrey participated in the Ontario Women's Amateur Tournament, where she finished 37th with a three-round total of 237 (85-77-75).

The fifth annual WMU Golf "Par Buster" golf outing will be taking place on Monday, August 27 at The Moors Golf Club. The event starts with registration at 11 a.m. It's $100 to be a program sponsor and $125 to be a golf participant. All the proceeds will go to the WMU Golf program.

The women's golf schedule has been released as they start their early season play in East Lansing on Sept. 15 for the Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational.
