Garrett Haar Heads to USA Junior Evaluation Camp

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan sophomore defenseman Garrett Haar heads to Lake Placid, N.Y., to take part in the 2012 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp beginning on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Haar, who was one of 17 defenseman under the age of 20 selected to the camp, will be a part of Team Blue. His first practice will be on Saturday at 9 a.m. Later in the afternoon at 4 p.m. he will compete against the USA’s White Team in a scrimmage. Blue and White battle again on Sunday afternoon and then Haar will be in action once again when USA Blue takes on Finland on Monday at 1 p.m.

Haar, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., registered eight points on one goal and seven assists in 36 games with the Broncos in his freshman year. He assisted on a goal to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in WMU’s 6-2 win over Miami in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Semifinal. He finished the season with a plus-four plus/minus rating and was named to the CCHA All-Rookie team.

This is the second straight season that a Bronco has participated in the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp. Last year Chase Balisy competed in the camp. If selected, Haar could participate in the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia.
