DeKALB, Ill. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team had a valiant showing in their Mid-American Conference tournament semifinal match, but Akron held their ground as the Broncos fell 4-0 to the Zips in DeKalb on Saturday.

With the loss, the Broncos finish the 2011-12 season with a 17-11 record, giving them their highest wins total since winning 21 matches in the 2008-09 season.

The Broncos held their own against the Zips in singles play after dropping the doubles point, pushing second-seeded Akron to third sets in a number of matches and keeping hopes alive with a number of strong performances through the line-up. Caroline Aleck saw her singles match cut short while she was leading, as the freshman hero from the quarterfinal round against Buffalo led Ksenia Berestetska 7-5, 4-5 in the second set.

Aleck, who clinched the Broncos' win over the Bulls the previous day with a win in singles play, finishes her freshman season with a 19-11 singles record, second on the team behind Kathleen Hawkins.

Aleck was not the only player on the verge of perhaps cutting into the Zips' lead, as teammates Maria Nivia and Jill Pastunink each forced third sets in their respective matches. Pastunink split the first two sets in the No. 6 singles match with Natalia Kuvakina, while Nivia seemed just moments away from downing Prang Pantusart in the No. 3 singles match.

Hawkins showed great resiliency in her No. 4 singles match, holding off 10 match points at one point against Angelina Jogasuria. Hawkins forced Jogasuria into a tiebreaker in the second set, which the Zips won by a 7-3 score to clinch the individual and team match with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) result.
