Broncos Blank Buffalo, 4-0
With a tenuous one-run lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, Western Michigan's bats woke up to post three runs on the board. Buchanan smacked her team-leading sixth home run of the season over the right center field wall to give WMU a 4-0 cushion.
Buchanan has 14 home runs in less than two seasons in the Brown & Gold, a total that ranks third all-time at WMU, two behind Whitney.
The production on the base paths started with two outs as Gracie Barstad, who was 2-for-2 on Saturday, ripped a shot to shortstop that ricocheted off the fielder's shin to put a runner aboard. Courtney Rousseau drew a two-out walk to set the stage for Buchanan. Facing a 2-2 count, she lifted the ball up and over the wall for the three-run bomb.
WMU scored first on Diana Patterson's base hit to left center field, scoring Whitney who had doubled down the left field line to lead off the game.
The first run of the game would be all Whitney needed as she recorded her 17th career shut out, and fifth of the season. She struck out eight batters to bring her career total to 624, leaving her just four behind Ball State's Bernie Coffman (1986-89) for sixth on the Mid-American career list.
Whitney now has thrown 633.0 innings in her career, a total that ranks fourth all-time at WMU and her 70 career complete games also ranks fourth, passing Kris Witucki (1988-91).
