Brown Tops Gold In Baseball Series Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Bronco baseball team began its fall World Series Monday, Oct. 17, at Robert J. Bobb Stadium with Brown defeating Gold in Game 1, 8-2.

Vinnie Booker (Clarkston/Lake Orion), Lawrence Herron (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Central), Jimmy Martinez (Auburn Hills/DeLaSalle) and Theo Piccirilli (Orchard Lake/St. Mary's) collected two hits apiece, one for extra bases, and drove in a run for the Brown.

Freshman Jared Kujawa (Temperance/Bedford) went 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Gold, which was only able to scatter six hits on the day. The Gold posted four costly errors and sophomore RHP Patrick Borlik (South Bend, Ind./Washington) suffered the loss.

Senior LHP Casey Webber did not allow a run and picked up the win, while sophomore Monty Porter (Portage/Portage Central) earned the save, allowing two runs in four innings of relief.

Webber (Tinley Park, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led the Broncos in 2011 with a 2.86 ERA in 88 innings pitched. The southpaw recorded 77 K's with only 37 walks, holding opponents to a .259 batting average. He set the WMU single-season record for pickoffs with 10 and is also the school's career pickoff leader with 20. Webber was an all-star selection for the Chillicothe Paints of the Prospect League this summer having finished seventh overall with a 2.66 ERA.

Game 2 of the Brown & Gold Series is slated for this Friday, Oct. 21 at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and admission is free. Game 3 is Saturday at 1 p.m.
