Bronco Gymnastics Signs Two For 2011-12

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan gymnastics coach Dave Kuzara has announced that Michelle Adams and Shelby Pflug have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at WMU in 2011-12.

“Both of these young ladies bring Junior Olympic National level competitive experience will help us achieve our goal of being more competitive on a national level,” said second-year head coach Kuzara.

Adams is a native of Fond du Lac, Wis., and trained at the Oshkosh Gymnastics Center. She has qualified and competed at the USAG Junior Olympic Nationals as a Level 10 gymnast. Competing as an all-arounder at the 2009 Junior Olympic Nationals in Puyallup, Wash., she recorded her top score on the vault, tying for 19th with a 9.575. She placed 26th on the floor (9.350) as well as all-around (37.125) and finished 30th on bars (9.150) and 36th on the beam (9.050).

Adams took second on vault and fourth on floor in the Wisconsin state meet in both 2008 and 2009, and placed third in the all-around in 2009. She shared top honors at the 2009 Regional 4 Championships on bars, was runner-up on vault and floor and took third in the all-around. She took second on floor in 2008 also.

“Michelle’s floor and vault are breathtaking and uneven bars is probably her strongest event of all,” said Kuzara. “She will make an immediate impact in three events and her power and grace will make her a crowd favorite.”

Shelby Pflug is from Round Lake, Ill., and trained at Aerials Gymnastics in nearby Downers Grove, Ill. Pflug competed at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals in Dallas, Texas, where she finished 18th on bars (9.250), floor (9.450) and in the all-around (37.000). She placed 30th on vault (9.400) and 33rd on beam (8.900).

In this past Region 5 meet, she took fourth on bars (9.275) and in the all-around (36.500), while posting top-10 finishes on the vault (5th - 9.450) and floor (9th - 9.175).

“Shelby will remind our fans of Kristine Garbarino which is a great compliment to her gymnastics. She will be a steady performer on all four events and will be dynamic to watch on floor exercise and vault.”
