KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan led by a run heading into the top of the ninth, but Central Michigan managed to tie the game and score four runs in the 10th, defeating WMU 9-5 Sunday.
Central Michigan (23-26, 11-13 MAC) scored four runs in the first and did not score again until tying the game at 5-5 in the ninth.
Western Michigan (13-32, 8-16 MAC) got two runs back in the bottom of the first. Kyle Galbraith and Pedro Dager hit back-to-back doubles and Chris Lewis scored both with a single through the left side.
Grant Simotes hit a two-run home run to left field in the sixth, evening the score at 4-4. WMU pulled ahead, 5-4, the next inning. Galbraith hit a leadoff single and scored on a fielder's choice by Matthew Abro.
WMU was three outs away from the win, but Central Michigan came up with a run in the top of the ninth off reliever Kevan Hess to force extra innings. Scott Phillion hit a leadoff single for the Chippewas, moved over to second on a sac bunt and reached third on a passed ball. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Dale Cornstubble.
Tim Mowry was brought in to throw the 10th and ran into trouble right away. Ricky Clark started off the inning with a single and went on to score what would be the winning run. Four hits and two walks led to four runs in the inning.
Galbraith went 3-for-5 at the plate and Lewis and Simotes each finished with two hits.
Western Michigan takes on Notre Dame tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
