MUNCIE, Ind. - The Western Michigan University baseball team (20-17, 8-9 MAC) dropped its second straight in its three game Mid-American Conference series at Ball State (24-18, 10-7 MAC) after losing (10-5) on Saturday afternoon at Ball Diamond.
Ball State for the second straight day rallied off three runs early on in the game to take a quick 3-0 lead to end the first inning. Western Michigan answered back as sophomore DH Nathan Marquardt got things started in the second with a single up the middle. Senior Travis May flied out for the first out to bring up junior Kyle Maunus who hit one through the right side.
After a Bronco strike out, freshman Brent Gerlach loaded the bases for the Brown & Gold after he was hit by pitch.
Back-to-back doubles from senior RC Dickerson and freshman Zach Gentile earned Western Michigan its first lead of the series after two ties in yesterday's action, 4-3.
WMU held off the Cardinals in the bottom half of the second. The Broncos went down in order in the top of the third. Ball State knocked in two runs in the third to take a 5-4 edge over Western Michigan after back-to-back doubles.
Maunus collected his second hit of the day and it was a big hit as he homered to left centerfield to tie the ball game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth. The home run was Maunus's fourth of the season.
The Cardinals third baseman senior CJ Webb went yard in the bottom of the fifth to take back the lead, 6-5. BSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-5 ball game. Ball State secured its (10-5) victory after scoring three more runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two run triple and a sacrifice bunt.
In his 12th appearance on the mound sophomore RHP Dan Coberley fell to 3-3 on the season with the loss on the mound for the Broncos. In five innings of work Coberley surrendered two runs off of four hits while striking out three batters.
WMU will continue league action at Ball Diamond on April 30. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
