ALLEN, Texas -- Western Michigan Hockey alum Riley Gill helped the Allen Americans claim their second straight Kelly Cup Championship on Thursday night after beating the Wheeling Nailers 4-2.
Allen won the series 4-2 at the expense of another WMU hockey alum, David Gove. Gove took the reins at Wheeling early on in the season as head coach and led the team all the way to the finals.
The Northville, Min., native helped the Americans to a 1-0 series lead after starting it off with a 5-3 win. The Nailers struck back and took the next two games to take a 2-1 lead before Allen closed out the final three games.
Gill made 42 saves in the final game of the series and along the way broke the ECHL Finals record for most career wins as a goaltender. That record now sits at 12. He went 11-5 in the ECHL Playoffs with a 2.37 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
This is Gill's third Kelly Cup Championship and second with the Americans. Gill also won a championship with the Reading Royals in 2013.
