Men's Tennis Starts Journey for 11th MAC Tournament Championship in School History

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will look to finish what it started by winning a Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament Championship to go along with the teams MAC Regular Season Championship. The Broncos will battle Binghamton on Friday, April 29 at 11 a.m. in DeKalb, Ill. on the campus of Northern Illinois.

WMU enters as the MAC Regular Season Champion and the No. 1 seed. The Broncos went 18-5 this season and 6-1 in the MAC and are coming into this weekend as winners of 10 of the last 11 matches. The Bearcats, who were the only MAC team to beat WMU this season, come into this match at 13-8 overall and ended 4-3 in the MAC, placing them in a four-way tie for fourth place.

Junior Matt Hamilton (No. 3) has been on fire lately, winning five straight and 10 of his last 11 matches to bring his overall record to 24-8. Senior Ruben Greiner (No. 4) recently had a 13-match winning streak and has the best winning percentage on the team at 20-5 overall. Junior Daniel Loebel (No. 5) is 24-10 and is 8-2 in his last 10 matches. Sophomores Jefta Kecic (No. 1) and Maik Steiner (No. 2) are 16-13 and 17-15, respectively.

In doubles play, the duo of Hamilton/Steiner have the team lead in wins at 26-5 overall but the team of senior Jimmy Beckwith/Kecic have won six straight matches to bring their record to 12-2 overall. Greiner/senior Stephen Payne, who have seen time together as of late, are a perfect 4-0 this season and went 2-0 in the MAC. They were also just named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week.

The Bearcats knocked the Broncos out of the MAC Tournament last season in the semifinals. WMU has won a league-best 24 MAC Championships including 17 under head coach Dave Morin. Morin has led his squad to the NCAA Tournament 10 times in his 19-year career.

A win over the Bearcats on Friday would bring the Broncos to the MAC Tournament Championship, which is set for Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUMensTennis for all updates about the team!
