KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team has officially won the 2016 Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season championship after Binghamton lost Thursday afternoon to Buffalo.
The 2016 championship is WMU's 23rd in program history and eighth under head coach Dave Morin.
"(A MAC championship) has been one of our goals since the first day of practice," Morin said. "We feel fortunate to have won the regular season in a really competitive league and I'm very happy for our seniors.
"We still have work to do and we have a tough Toledo squad this weekend. This year's team is one of the biggest I've had here at WMU, and everybody on the team has been total team players. They've played their roles and supported the team all year long and that just makes it that much more special."
The last regular season championship came in 2011 where the Broncos finished 15-11 and 5-0 in the MAC. WMU is 17-5 this season and 5-1 in the MAC and will finish the season on the road at Toledo on Saturday, April 23.
The Broncos have clinched the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament but have not earned a place yet in the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the MAC Tournament, which will take place at Northern Illinois from April 29-30, is awarded a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
