KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan volleyball went 3-0 on Saturday, defeating IPFW, Ferris State and Valparaiso to wrap up its Spring Season.
The first match of the day pitted the Broncos against the Mastadons. Both teams started out the first set going back and forth before WMU opened things up with tough serving and offensive execution. The set ended on a long run behind big swings from Nicole Kinser and the middles Sydney Lemay and Olivia Kofie. The second set was all Broncos as they dominated from the first point. Setter Alysia Baznik was able to spread around the offense putting the IPFW defense in a guessing game.
The second match of the day for Western Michigan was against the Ferris St. Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were able to make some excellent defensive plays early in the first set but the Broncos quickly adjusted and set the tempo for the match halfway through the first set. Solid backcourt play from Izzy Porada and Bailey Schnell neutralized the Ferris attack and allowed WMU to put their offense into full gear. WMU closed out both the first and second set with convincing runs as Nicole Kinser continued to assert her dominance at the net.
The third match of the day was the closest for the Broncos as Valparaiso was able to take leads in both the first and second sets. WMU was in a hole late in the first set but was able to tie the score at 24-24 behind excellent serving and defensive tenacity. The Broncos then played their longest point of the day before a block ended it giving the Broncos a 26-24 first set win. The second set once again saw the Crusaders start off strong but the Broncos stampeded back into the set with their blocking and timely swings. The Broncos ended the day and spring season with a thunderous Sydney Lemay swing that put an exclamation point on the day!
The team will now take a couple of weeks off to study and take their finals before beginning training for Europe on April 30. The team will be in Europe from May 7-18 playing six matches against European teams.
