BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team stayed atop the Mid-American Conference (MAC) standings with a 5-2 win over Buffalo Sunday morning on the road.
The Broncos improved to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the MAC, making them the lone team in the conference with one loss. The Bulls fell to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the MAC.
Buffalo started out strong in doubles, claiming No. 1 but WMU stormed right back taking wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point. The duo of Jimmy Beckwith/Jefta Kecic earned a win at No. 3, beating Sergio Arevalillo/Ethan Nittolo 6-4 and then the team of Matt Hamilton/Maik Steiner topped Akhil Mehta/Tony Miller 7-5 to clinch it. Hamilton/Steiner improved to a team-best 26-4 and won their ninth straight match.
In singles, junior Daniel Loebel earned a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 5 to put the Broncos up 2-0 at the time. After the Bulls won at No. 1, Greiner won 6-4, 6-4 to improve to 18-4 this season and has now won 14 of his last 15 matches. Hamilton earned the match clincher at No. 3, defeating Amar Hromic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to improve to 22-8 this season. Andrew Cahn earned the final win of the day, defeating Tony Miller at No. 6 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to move to 17-7 this season.
