GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Western Michigan volleyball team began its spring season with three matches at Aquinas College over the weekend.
The day started against the University of Michigan. The Broncos battled with the Wolverines the entire match, eventually falling 29-27 and 25-20. The team saw good play from the middles against the physical Maize & Blue, but unfortunately Michigan was a little too much at the end of each set.
The next match saw WMU take on Michigan State, beating the Spartans in three sets. The Broncos came out in the first set serving tough and causing problems for MSU. The Broncos were able to pull away again late in the set, taking some crucial swings and winning 25-19. The second set saw WMU start slow and struggle to get going dropping it 25-21. In the third set the Broncos took an early lead once again and were able to finish off the match with a big swing from Sydney LeMay, 15-11.
The final match and Western Michigan's showcase match was against the Oakland Grizzlies. The Broncos once again began the match with a sense of urgency and remained composed at the end to win it 26-24 on a block from Olivia Kofie and Alysia Baznik. The second set saw the Grizzlies take an early lead and hold onto it to win 25-22. The third set saw WMU jump out to an 8-3 lead with big swings from Nicole Kinser and Mikaela Ryshytylo. Western MIchigan went up 14-11 but struggled to finish and eventually fell 19-17.
