Women's Basketball Falls to Eastern Michigan on Senior Night

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball honored the 2016 senior class of Alex Morton, Jessica Jessing and Deborah Meeks, but Eastern Michigan still came away with a tough win over the Broncos 63-52 at University Arena.

"Obviously is wasn't the story book ending to their careers that we would've liked but we still have the conference tournament in front of us," Head coach Shane Clipfell said. "Meeks is a great kid, I wish I could've coached her for four years because she never stopped, she just came to work every day. JJ and Alex have just been model student-athletes for this University. I have spent zero time dealing with anything that those two have done other then celebrating their accomplishments and their careers."

The Broncos fall to 15-14 and 7-10 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while the Eagles improve to 19-9, 10-7 in the MAC and have now won six of their last seven games.

EMU got out to an early lead and held on to it for the entire first half. In the first quarter, both teams struggled from the floor combining to go 9-for-34 as the Eagles led 12-9 after one. The Eagles outscored the Broncos 19-11 in the second quarter, taking a 31-20 lead into the break. EMU, who leads the MAC in steals, had nine at the break while forcing 11 WMU turnovers.

In the third quarter the Broncos' offense heated up, outscoring the Eagles 19-11 and trailed 42-39 heading into the final quarter. WMU shot 6-for-11 from the floor in the quarter, as junior Meredith Shipman connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Meeks also hit one, which gave WMU its first lead of the game at the 2:48 mark in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Broncos tied it once at the 7:46 mark on a Najee Smith 3-pointer, but the Eagles ended the game going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line to come away with the win.

Individually, freshman Breanna Mobley continued her stellar stretch of games with her fifth double-double in the past six games finishing with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds with five coming on the offensive glass. Jessing led the team in scoring with 14 points and grabbed five rebounds while Shipman finished with 11 points and three assists. Morton led the team with a game-high eight assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes for the fifth consecutive game.

The Broncos finished shooting 36.4-percent from the floor while the Eagles were at 33.9-percent. WMU won the rebounding battle 40-36 and had nine more assists than EMU, but the Eagles went 20-for-25 from the free-throw line while the Broncos shot 6-for-8.

Ohio defeated Bowling Green 75-58, guaranteeing the Broncos a home game in the first round of the MAC Tournament on Monday, March 7. Time is TBA.

WMU will play its final regular season game on Saturday, March 5 on the road against Northern Illinois. Game time from DeKalb, Ill. is set for 2 p.m.
