STERLING, Colo.- Western Michigan assistant men's soccer coach David Groves has departed the Bronco program to accept the head coaching position at Northeastern Junior College.
NJC is a two-year junior college located in Sterling, Colo. It is a member college of the Colorado Community College System. Groves becomes the third coach in school history.
Groves joined the Western Michigan staff in May 2014 and spent the last three years as a volunteer assistant on the Bronco sidelines. This past season, WMU finished with an 11-4-4 overall record, going 4-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference. WMU set a school record with 12 shutouts and was one victory shy of tying the program record for wins (12).
"I cannot thank Coach Wiseman and the coaching staff enough for the experience over the past two years," Groves said. "I've made a lot of great relationships and close friends during my time with the soccer program.
"Although Kalamazoo will always feel like home, it was time for a new adventure in my life and something that at this moment, I feel completely ready for. I will always be a Bronco fan, advocate for Kalamazoo, and supporter of all things WMU."
Some notable results in 2015 included a 1-1 tie against No. 5 Akron and a shutout against Big Ten foe Michigan. WMU went undefeated in its last seven regular season games.
Nationally, the Broncos cracked the TopDrawerSoccer Top 25 for the first time in school history and were ranked during back-to-back weeks. The Broncos debuted in the poll at No. 24 on September 14 and moved up to No. 18 on September 21.
In the classroom, Western Michigan carried one of the top five team GPAs among Division I schools. The Broncos had a 3.44 team GPA. In the classroom, Western Michigan, as a whole, carried one of the top five team GPAs among Division I schools. The Broncos had a 3.41 team GPA.
In addition to coaching at WMU, Groves served as the head women's soccer coach at Plainwell High School, holding an overall record of 39-17-5. Before joining the Broncos, Groves led the Kalamazoo Central men's soccer program to a 38-24-3 overall record. Additionally, he served as a director and staff coach at the Kalamazoo Kingdom Soccer Club.
Groves earned his Master of Arts degree in 2015 and Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2009, both from Western Michigan University. He is a USSF National D licensed coach.
