EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team earned a hard fought 5-2 win over Michigan State of the Big Ten Saturday afternoon on the road. The Broncos, who came in ranked No. 69 in the Oracle/ITA Men's Tennis Team Rankings, improve to 9-4 overall while the Spartans fall to 9-6 this season.
WMU earned the doubles point after the duos of Matt Hamilton/Maik Steiner and Jefta Kecic/Jimmy Beckwith earned wins. Hamilton/Steiner improved to 18-4 this season and 6-1 this spring.
In singles play, Ruben Greiner and Daniel Loebel came out and won in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively. With the Broncos up 3-0, the Spartans earned a win at the No. 1 spot, but Steiner battled back in the third set to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and clinch the match for WMU. Hamilton also came away with a win in the No. 3 spot, taking it 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 over Jasper Koenen.
The Broncos will take the rest of the week off and play again on March 4 on the road against Cleveland State.
