KALAMAZOO, Mich- The Western Michigan men's tennis team defeated Green Bay 6-1 at West Hills Athletic Club to remain undefeated in dual matches. The Broncos are 4-0 on the year and have not dropped the doubles point to an opponent this season. Senior Ruben Greiner, freshman Matej Svejtlicic, junior Matt Hamilton and junior Daniel Loebel remain undefeated in singles play during the dual match season and have a combined record of 10-0.
Western Michigan earned the doubles point in the match after winning at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. The duo of Maik Steiner and Jimmy Beckwith defeated Green Bay's Rowan Isaaks and Miles McDowall on court three 6-3. Steiner and Beckwith moved to 3-0 overall in doubles matches this year. Greiner and Loebel clinched the doubles point by defeating Green Bay's Leo Gomez-Islinger and Kraenzler Florian 6-4. Loebel and Greiner moved to 4-0 in doubles matches this year. Hamilton and Stephen Payne dropped a back and forth battle at No. 2 doubles to Green Bay's Leto and Scott 7-5.
In singles, No. 5 finished first where Greiner defeated Joey Leto 6-1, 6-2 to give the Broncos a 2-0 advantage. Green Bay's Gomez-Islinger defeated Jefta Kecic at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1. Hamilton defeated Green Bay's Florian 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to put the Broncos up 3-1. Svjetlicic clinched the match for the Broncos by defeating Joshua Schramm at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-5.
Loebel fought back after dropping the first set to Green Bay's Charlie Ridout to win by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Maik Steiner also battled to win his match at No. 2 singles against Scott Howard, after winning the first set 7-6 (8-6), Steiner dropped the second set 4-6. Steiner and Scott played a super tie-breaker in lieu of a third set which Steiner won 11-9.
The Broncos will return to action on the road at Valparaiso on Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.
