KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept the men's side of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) weekly awards for this week.
Junior Matt Hamilton won the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week while also taking home the MAC Men's Singles Player of the Week. The duo of senior Ruben Greiner and sophomore Daniel Loebel won the MAC Men's Doubles Team of the Week.
Hamilton is a finance major with a 3.98 grade point average and was voted an Academic All-MAC selection and to the Capital One Academic All-District team in 2014. This is his third career MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week selection with the first coming for the week of Feb. 25, 2014 and the second coming earlier this season on Sept. 21.
Hamilton earned his first career win in the No. 1 slot against Illinois-Chicago defeating Carl Hedstrom 6-2, 6-4 helping the Broncos to a 6-1 win over the Flames. Hamilton was the one who clinched the win for Western Michigan as it moved to 1-0 at the time opening the spring season up on a high note. Hamilton also earned a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win in the No. 2 spot over Purdue's Benjamin Ugarte. Once again, Hamilton was the clincher in the 4-2 win over the Boilermakers as he improved his season record to 13-3. It helped WMU top a Big Ten team for the 14th consecutive season.
Greiner/Loebel earned back-to-back doubles point clinchers over Eastern Kentucky and Purdue. The duo defeated Sebastian Mueller/Diego Asis (EKU) 6-4 in the No. 2 slot to clinch the doubles point in the Broncos win over the Colonels. They won their second match of the day by moving up to the No. 1 doubles slot and defeating Gergely Madarasz/Benjamin Ugarte (PUR) 6-4 to help the Broncos to a 4-2 win over the big foe, Purdue. The duo moved to 7-2 playing together this season.
The Broncos return to action as they host Green Bay at home at West Hills with match time scheduled for 7 p.m.
