GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 2 seeded Florida in the First Round of the NCAA Women's College Cup in front of 832 fans at Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Florida's campus. The Broncos end the season at 14-4-4 and claimed the MAC Tournament Championship. Florida, the SEC regular season and tournament champions, improved to 18-3-1. WMU's program record 11-game unbeaten streak came to an end as well as their three-game shutout streak.
“(The season's) been amazing, I'm just so just blessed and privileged to be around this team. The seniors had an amazing career as they have taken this program to amazing heights going to the NCAA Tournament twice, won the MAC tournament twice and have been to three MAC Championships games,” Head coach Nate Norman said. “It's just been a special group and not just the seniors, the whole team. It has been one of the greatest seasons I've ever been a part of; as a player or a coach.”
The game was scoreless at the half as the Gators led the shot battle 7-1. Kylie Nylen had the lone shot for the Broncos in the first half in the 37th minute as she attempted it from about 30 yards out, but it sailed high.
In the second half, the Gators SEC Offensive Player of the Year Savannah Jordan had a good look from the top of the circle and finished it on an assist by Briana Solis in the 48th minute to put UF up 1-0 early. The Broncos upped the tempo and were able to create more shots going even with the Gators 8-8 in the second half, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Irene Young finished with three shots while Nylen had two. WMU had five shots within six minutes of one another from the 73rd minute until the 79th. Alex Ruffer had a shot blocked in the 73rd minute which set up Liz Abro for another shot, but it sailed high. In the 75th minute, Nylen had a shot blocked while Young had a shot go high and a header that was saved.
“I thought we played fantastic tonight, we defended very hard and we were able to keep the ball a lot,” Norman said. “Unfortunately, we gave them a chance in the second half on a counter and the girl had a great shot and finished it.”
For the game, UF won the shot battle 15-9 as the Gators had six shots on goal and the Broncos had three. WMU goalkeeper Stephanie Heber finished with four saves while the team also added one where Lindsey Lee stopped a ball just short of a goal. Florida goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese finished with three saves. UF was penalized for offsides four times and the bench was also issued a yellow card in the 71st minute. Each team finished with eight fouls.
