Box Score DEKALB, Ill.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team set a new school record with its 10th shutout of the season, defeating Northern Illinois on the road Saturday evening, 1-0.
First-year transfer and Kalamazoo native Jay McIntosh booted in the game-winner for the Broncos, finishing a cross from senior Greg Timmer in the 80th minute. McIntosh played his freshman season at Indiana before transferring to WMU this past fall. His game-winner Saturday was his first career goal as a Bronco.
With the win, WMU improves to 9-3-4 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
The previous shutout record for WMU was nine games, a mark established in 1988 and 1989.
“It certainly wasn't the prettiest game of the year,” said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. “NIU played well, they competed at every position and were very organized.
“The game itself had very few chances. Our keeper Drew Shepherd was only forced to make one save and it was a good one to start the second half. We put two dangerous chances together on target and their goalkeeper made a great save on Nick Wysong's free kick. Jay's goal however was unstoppable.
“I am very proud of our guys finding three points on the road when we were not at our best. Another shutout and we set a new program record at Western Michigan, which I think everyone can be proud of. We have a great team with a lot of heart and every game we have players step up.
“It says a lot about our league, the fact that every team heading into the last game of the regular season has a chance to make the conference tournament. The MAC is tough and filled with very capable teams.”
Western Michigan plays Buffalo at home on Nov. 7 in its final regular season game, which will also be Senior Day for WMU. The top four teams advance to the 2015 MAC Tournament. The regular season champion serves as the tournament host.
