DEKALB, Ill. -- Gina Maddi netted the game-tying goal with 46 seconds remaining in regulation and Emma Kahn broke the program record with her 10th goal of the season as Western Michigan tied Northern Illinois 2-2 on the road on Thursday afternoon.
Maddi pounced on a loose ball and fired it from distance to tally her sixth goal of the season to tie the game up at 2-2. WMU (11-3-4, 8-1-2 MAC) went and outshot NIU by a combined 5-1 in the two overtime periods but was unable to find the game-winner.
"It was a tough game today," said head coach Nate Norman. "It was very cold and windy and I thought Northern Illinois played extremely hard. Overall I was very happy with how we played except for a few moments. We are excited to get to the MAC Tournament and compete on Sunday."
The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead on Kahn's record-breaking goal in the 13th minute. Kahn got a pass from Alyssa Smith and fired it into the lower-right corner of the net. Kahn passes Anina Cicerone (2011), Stephanie Skowneski (2010), Jessica Pattison (2003) and WMU Hall of Famer Katie Markey (1997) in the history books.
"Emma has been fantastic all season," Norman added. "Even though she missed four games midway through the season due to injury she was able to break the all-time record. The most exciting thing about that is she will have two more years to now beat her own record."
The Huskies tied the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute on a goal by Kate Wirthlin after she flicked the ball into the net on a free kick by Lauren Gierman.
Gierman set up another goal in the 70th minute once again off a free kick. This time it was Jess Woolridge heading it into the net to give Northern Illinois a 2-1 lead.
NIU goalkeeper Amy Annala made eight saves in the tie and the Broncos outshot the Huskies 18-6 overall. WMU also had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Western Michigan's opponent for Sunday's home MAC Quarterfinals matchup will be announced on Friday morning.
