Men's Soccer Posts Eighth Shutout in 3-0 Win Over Green Bay

Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan men's soccer rolled to a 3-0 victory over visiting Green Bay Tuesday, improving the team's overall record to 8-3-2 on the season. The Broncos return to Mid-American Conference action Saturday, hosting No. 5 Akron at noon at the WMU Soccer Complex. Admission is free.

The shutout over Green Bay was Western Michigan's eighth of the year, one shy of tying the school record of nine which was accomplished in 1988 and 1989.

Seniors Nick Wysong, Connor Furgason and Greg Timmer each scored in the win. Wysong also had an assist, as did senior Carlos Suarez, who has five points in the last two games. Suarez scored both goals in WMU's 2-1 victory over Bowling Green this past Saturday.

"Overall I was very pleased with the performance today," said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. "We had a lot of very good performances and our depth showed well today. The team produced three great goals and we really had purpose with our possession. The defense limited Green Bay's chances and controlled the tempo throughout the match."

The game was played almost entirely in Western Michigan's attacking half for the first 45 minutes. Goals by Wysong and Furgason put WMU up 2-0 at halftime.

Wysong recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 9th minute on the assist by Suarez. WMU played quickly through the midfield on the right side into Suarez at the top of the box. Suarez dumped a pass off to Wysong on the left who drilled his shot into the far back post.

The Broncos' second goal came in the 32nd minute as Wysong curled a 30-yard free kick in from the left side of the field. Furgason out-muscled his defender and stretched his leg out on the backside, one-timing the ball into the far upper 90 for his third goal of the year.

Green Bay was able to push forward more on its attack in the second half, but Timmer put the game away for good in the 80th minute with his first goal of the season. The crafty midfielder attacked the center and rocketed a shot past the right of the keeper from distance.

"It was nice to see Timmer on the score sheet," Wiseman added. "He has been playing at a high level and his goal today was absolutely fantastic."

Senior Chase Rau made two saves in goal for the Brown & Gold, improving his record between the posts to 3-3-1 on the year. WMU's defense was also credited with three team saves.

Western Michigan's victory was its second in a row over Green Bay. The Broncos also defeated the Phoenix, 2-1, in Wisconsin last season. It was just the fourth ever win over Green Bay, a perennial Horizon League power, in 27 all-time meetings, dating back to 1975.

Western Michigan's matchup Saturday against nationally-ranked Akron is one of the most anticipated of the season. WMU enters with a 1-1-0 conference record while Akron is 2-0-0. The Broncos defeated the Zips, ranked No. 19 at the time, last year in the regular season meeting in Akron, 1-0. Akron was able to come back from a 1-0 deficit in the 2014 MAC Tournament Semifinals, beating WMU 2-1 on a pair of late penalty kicks.
