WMU Blanks MAC East Leaders Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team downed Mid-American Conference East Division leaders Miami, 2-0, on Senior Day at the WMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

Gina Maddi scored her fourth goal in two games and Emma Kahn put the nail in the coffin in the 86th minute to seal the victory. Stephanie Heber made six saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season.

The Broncos (8-3-3, 5-1-1 MAC) snapped Miami's three-game winning streak. The red-hot RedHawks had also won seven of their last eight before WMU grounded them.

Maddi once again gave Western Michigan an early lead, scoring in the fifth minute on an unassisted goal. The goal was her fifth of the season and her second-straight game-winning goal by finnishing off a cross from Alex Ruffer

The Broncos were able to maintain possession and increase their attack in the second half, outshooting Miami 10-5. Kahn put the game away with 4:55 left on the clock. Irene Young found Kahn in the box and she fired a shot through Miami goalkeeper Vic Maniaci's arms and into the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Overall WMU outshot MU 14-10, with the shots tied 6-6 on goal. Young and Alex Ruffer each had three shots on the day to lead the Broncos.

Up next is MAC West leaders Ball State at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m.
