Broncos and Bulls Battle to 1-1 Tie

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team scored late to force overtime and battled the reigning Mid-American Conference Champion Buffalo Bulls to a 1-1 tie at the WMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

After a turnover early in the second half resulted in a goal by the Bulls, the Broncos turned up the pressure in the second half and finally broke through in the 76th minute when Irene Young found Lacey Zahn for her first career goal. Young sailed in a corner kick that got just past Buffalo keeper Laura Dougall. Zahn was positioned on the back-post and kicked it in for the game-tying goal.

Both teams had chances in the overtime, including UB's Rebecca Bramble. Bramble had a breakaway at the end of the second overtime but her screaming shot was right at WMU's Stephanie Heber.

Buffalo struck just 36 seconds into the second half, capitalizing on a turnover at mid-field. Celina Carrero took it into the box and was able to pull Heber out of position for the tap-in goal by Kassidy Kidd.

The Bulls outshot the Broncos 12-10 on the day and had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Western Michigan hosts Akron on Sunday at 1 p.m.
