KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan women's soccer teamed earned its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season after defeating rivals Central Michigan, 1-0, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
Kylie Nylen scored the the game's lone goal in the fifth minute and the Broncos (4-2-2, 1-0-0 MAC) withstood a second-half surge by the Chippewas to earn the shutout. Stephanie Heber made four saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
"I thought we did a great job of creating chances in the first half," said head coach Nate Norman. "Kylie hit a great shot and the early goal was great. I thought we created some other good chances in the first but couldn't finish it off. In the second half I thought we did a good job of killing off the game when Central applied a lot of pressure. They are a tough team and I think they're going to do really well in the MAC this season."
Some great early possession led to Nylen's first goal of the season. She found Alyssa Smith down the left of the box. Smith drew the defender to her and it opened up Nylen for a blast from the corner of the 18-yard box. Her shot flew into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
WMU rode the 1-0 lead into the half after outshooting CMU 10-4 in the first half. The Chippewas surged in the second half with bouts of possession but the Bronco defense clamped down and only allowed three total shots the rest of the way.
