KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan Broncos had a good turnout in their summer collegiate baseball leagues. The NCAA sanctions these wood bat leagues, some of which are sponsored in part by a donation from Major League Baseball. Several leagues exist throughout the country and teams are comprised of the top college players from North America and beyond, representing the highest level of pre-professional amateur baseball.
LHP
Keegan Akin pitched in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Bourne Braves. In the league Akin had 33.1 innings pitched with seven starts. He maintained a 2.70 ERA and recorded 39 strikeouts which ranked him ninth for total strikeouts in the league. In the playoffs, Akin threw 4.2 innings with four strikeouts, surrendering no runs, to help the Bourne Braves advance in the postseason.
LHP
Tanner Allison had a tremendous season for the Chillicothe Paints in the Prospect League. Allison finished the summer at the top of the list in most major pitching categories. He led the league in wins (8), had the second best ERA (1.07), and was third for total strikeouts (56).Allison also had a great outing for Paints in the playoffs picking up the win in a six-inning effort which he allowed just one run and struck out four.
Three Broncos were selected to represent their teams in summer league All-Star Games. Allison was joined by Chillicothe Paint's teammate
Grant Miller in the Prospect League. Playing for the Lake Erie Monarchs, LHP
Jacob Piechota played in the Great Lakes League game. Miller concluded his summer hitting .295 with nine extra base hits and only five fielding errors in 51 games. He also finished with a .453 on-base percentage which was second best in the Prospect League.
