AKRON, Ohio- After storming through the one-loss bracket, No. 5 seeded Western Michigan finally met its match, falling to No. 2 seed Ball State, 11-3, in the championship round of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Softball Tournament.
WMU advanced to the championship round after knocking off No. 4 Central Michigan in a 10:30 a.m. game on Saturday. The Broncos' tournament run started with a 2-0 loss against CMU in the opening game on Wednesday and the team went on to beat No. 8 Ohio, No. 3 Miami, No. 1 Kent State and the Chippewas in elimination games.
Four Broncos were named to the 2015 MAC All-Tournament Team - junior pitcher
Allyson Kus, sophomore third baseman
Kelsea Cichocki, junior second baseman
Melissa Palmer and sophomore left fielder
Ivy Schaaf.
Kus started all six games of the tournament for Western Michigan and picked up three wins, including a three-hit shutout against Central Michigan, and recorded a save. She had a 2.28 ERA, throwing 30.2 of the 37.2 innings played and had 19 strikeouts.
Cichocki had a .500 batting average with three home runs, a double and 10 RBIs. Palmer batted .467 with two triples, a double and five RBIs and Schaaf hit .350 with two home runs and four RBIs.
A leadoff home run by Schaaf to start the game against Ball State and a solo home run by Cichocki to begin the second got WMU off to a 2-0 lead against the Cardinals.
Kus returned to the rubber for Western Michigan after throwing all seven innings against Central Michigan earlier in the day and with a half hour rest before facing Ball State. Kus put the Cardinals down in order in the first, but fatigue took over against the fresh Ball State bats in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals totaled five runs off of five hits, including a three-run home run by India Steward to take a 5-2 lead. BSU also got help from a Bronco error in the infield. Freshman
Anissa Sanchez came on in relief to record the final outs of the inning.
Western Michigan got a tally back with an unearned run in the top of the third, but that would be the final score for the Broncos. Ball State went on to plate three runs on a home run by Hanne Stuedemann in the fifth and capped the victory with three runs in the sixth.
Western Michigan ends the season with a 25-26 overall record and the tournament run marked the conclusion of the careers of three seniors in the Brown & Gold,
Becca Shemberger,
Jenny Rohn and
Taylor Sanicki.
