KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan annual Spring "Wooden Oar" Game ended with the Gold team beating the Brown team 34-10 on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Waldo Stadium.
Junior quarterback Zach Terrell had a game-high 15 completions for 223 yards on the day for the Gold team. Jarvion Franklin carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. Corey Davis caught five balls for 142 yards to lead all receivers. Redshirt freshman quarterback Chance Stewart had one of the highlights of the day with a 78-yard touchdown pass to fellow redshirt freshman running back Leo Ekwoge.
Jarrell McKinney, Jamar Simpkins and Andre Turner each recorded two sacks on the day, while Robert Spillane led all tacklers with seven.
Franklin notched his first of two touchdown runs to open up the game after running it in from six yards out. With a 7-0 lead Franklin pushed the lead to 14-0 after another touchdown run, this time from four yards out.
Andrew Haldeman, who kicked for both teams, connected on field goals from 43 yards and 27 yards before the end of the first half.
Ekwoge's 78-yard touchdown reception from Stewart was the lone score in the third quarter. Tom Flacco and Carrington Thompson connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to open the fourth quarter. Austin Guido ran in a score from one-yard out and Haldeman added another field goal to push the final score to 34-10.
With the Spring season wrapped up, the Broncos are back in action on Sept. 4 when they host Michigan State.
