MIDLAND, Texas – The Western Michigan women's tennis team won its third straight match and fourth in its last five with a 6-1 rout of the Western New Mexico Mustangs, as the Broncos took the first match of the West Texas Shootout at the Bush Tennis Center to improve to 7-5 overall on the season. The Broncos will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against New Mexico State and Texas – Permian Basin.
The Broncos blew through the doubles session and made quick work of the Mustangs in singles play, winning five of six singles matches to clinch the team win. The nationally-ranked doubles team of Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby remained undefeated at the top spot in the line-up, beating Ganna Tiurina and Annica Betz 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. Tracy Kuhle and Olivia Myers provided the other doubles win, beating Claudia Osuna and Tiffany Newell 6-0 as WMU took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Myers continued her strong run in singles play this year, picking up a No. 2 singles win over Betz by a 6-1, 6-3 score to improve to 9-3 in dual match singles. In fact, all five singles wins for the Broncos came via straight sets, with Kuhle, Eristavi, Ono, and Labina Petrovska all recording wins in relatively quick fashion in their positions. Eristavi made the quickest work of her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Osuna in the No. 4 singles match, while Kuhle also shut her opponent out in the second set with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Ashley Newell. Ono held off Pauline Emin in the second set of the No. 5 singles match for a 6-2, 7-5 victory, while Petrovska survived a tight first set with Tiffany Newell for a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
