KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 68th-ranked Western Michigan men's tennis team won its eighth straight match at home, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins 6-1 at West Hills Athletic Club to improve 10-3 overall on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on March 7 when they start a three-match road swing in Florida starting with Butler, followed by Bethune Cookman and Central Florida.
The Broncos took the doubles point against the Penguins and then claimed five of six singles matches on the court, clinching the team victory when Andrew Cahn won a second-set tiebreaker against Victor Pereira to take the No. 6 singles match and the claim the team win. Cahn also combined with Marc Shideler to win at No. 3 doubles, tying the doubles session and helping the Broncos eventually take the doubles point. After Cahn and Shideler's 6-1 win at the No. 3 doubles spot, the pairing of Jimmy Beckwith and Ruben Greiner cruised past Dawoud Kabli and Pereira 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to clinch the point.
Beckwith put the Broncos ahead 2-0 with a straight-sets win over Silviu Mistreanu at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-2, 6-2 to put the Broncos firmly in control of the match. Kabli defeated Pablo Mora to cut the Broncos' lead to 2-1, but Greiner beat Hugo Morth 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles match to make it a 3-1 score. Cahn closed out the win in the No. 6 singles match, beating Pereira 6-2, 7-6 (4) to make it a 4-1 score and assure the Broncos of their eighth straight win. Matt Hamilton bounced back from being a set down to beat Bassem El Mekawi 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match, and Jefta Kecic closed out the day with a three-setter against Remi Chancerel.
